Many of you may have heard about video wall display or maybe you even saw it a couple of times but didn’t notice at all.
What is video wall display? simply said : Multiple displays that can be used to create a large display. It combines several LCD / Plasma display into one large scale display. They came in formed of cube or stretched cube.
Video wall display (some call it matrix video wall) consists of LCD or Plasma display. It is recommended to use monitor or industrial grade products instead of consumer type products. What is the reason behind this?
Monitor type usually have slimmer bezel compare to TV’s bezel. With narrow bezel, it allows stylish images that are not blocked by the bezel. Currently they are several brand that have Plasma/ LCD monitor with narrow bezel (only 1,7cm thick). Thick bezel will obstruct the image and will provide gap between each display. This will happen if we used LCD TV or Plasma TV to build video wall display.
Besides narrow bezel, there’s also seamless bezel type. Seamless means that the bezel is so thin and reduced gap between each monitors in video wall form. The bezel only 7,3 mm – 6,7 mm. It’s very ideal for video wall display.
Other feature that included in most of plasma / LCD is built in wall matrix. With this feature you don’t need additional hardware or wall processor to construct a video wall display. Some manufacturer called this feature daisy chain link or build in video wall enlarger. This feature can only be used with RGB, DVI signal.
How do you build video wall with this feature? to put it simple, it works like this: Video wall with configurations of 2×2; output from source (RGB output) goes straight into input slot of display#1, then connect the signal from output of display#1 into input display#2, then connect again output from display#2 into input display#3 and so on until each monitor receives input signal. Then you will have to set each monitor their ID based on their position. Example: display#1 is set to be ID#1 and the position is on the upper left side and so on.
Next, what if you wanted to build video wall but you found out that the monitor you have didn’t have daisy chain / build in video wall enlarger? You will have additional hardware, Video Wall Processor/ Controller (VWP).
VWP has multiple outputs that will be connected into each correspondent monitor. The number of the outputs are depend on which configuration that you’re going to use. For example, 2×2 video wall means that the output from processor is 4x RGB/ DVI cables.
With VWP, each monitor can display different images/ contents or display single image in enlargement mode. This hardware is very powerful and quite expensive.
That will conclude my post of video wall display. I hope this will give better understanding about video wall.
